So the Soccer World Cup came and went and in spite of the pessimists we pulled it off magnificently and impressed the whole world. Now it’s back to ‘normal’, doing what we like best: complaining about corruption, potholes, the weather, etc. etc.
Perhaps it is worth recalling former President Mandela’s words at his inauguration in 1994: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us”.
Maybe that's it - our awesome potential as individuals and as a nation scares us. What if we gave it a good go and pulled it off? We’d have a lot to live up to then, wouldn’t we?
It’s always easier to moan about something than actually get off your butt and put it right.
